Chrysanthemum: September Flower of the Month

When you think of the chrysanthemum, your mind probably goes straight to the old-school, traditional homecoming mums (can we go back to the simplicity of these!?) or to the potted mums that everyone fights to keep alive in the fall. There are so much more to chrysanthemums though! They are one of our most used cut flowers around the shop (specifically the cremon variety!) They are available in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes! Some varieties are so beautiful they can be mistaken for a dahlia.

So, let’s learn a little about chrysanthemum:

  • The chrysanthemum was first cultivated in China as a flowering herb and is described in writings as early as the 15th Century B.C. As an herb, it was believed to have the power of life.

  • They have a long vase life of an average of 7-14 days.

  • The chrysanthemum has evolved over the years and the flowers have been transformed in unexpected ways from the traditional daisy-like blooms into large pompoms, compact buttons, mounded cushions, and exotic spider mums.

  • They are the November birth month flower.

  • Popular meanings include loyalty, truth, optimism, joy, longevity, strength, perfection, friendship, and secret love.

  • They contain no scent, so if you are sensisitive to floral fragrances - this is a great flower for you!

  • They are edible, but if you’re wanting to try them, make sure they haven’t been treated.
