Blue Flowers We Love

It is amazing what a pop of blue can do for a color palette. It can be a soft accent or a bold statement. Either way, we love a good blue flower! Well, naturally blue that is (we are not a fan of dyed/painted florals around here.) As you can imagine the options are limited, but the options are pretty darn beautiful if we say so ourselves. So, we want to show off some of our go-to top blue flower picks.

Hydrangea

Our favorite and easy to come by blue flowers is Blue Hydrangea!  We love hydrangeas as it is, but the blue varieties are * florist’s kiss *!

Blue hydrangeas are so easy to fill any container with! Take a large pitcher, a bowl, regular vase, or other vessel to display these large and gorgeous blooms!

Favorite varieties: Shocking Blue (bright/electric), Verena (light blue)

A couple of fun facts about Blue Hydrangeas:

  • The term “hydrangea” means water vessel in Greek! In fact, hydrangeas can drink through their blooms, not just their stems!

  • Blue Hydrangeas represent forgiveness, gratitude, and understanding.

  • They are grown in highly acidic soil which gives them their blue color. The higher the acidity the bluer the flower.

  • A word of warning though, hydrangeas are not safe for pets! So be careful when you’re displaying them in your home or gifting them to others!

Delphinium

Another popular blue flower is Blue Delphinium! This blue bloom is a tall and linear/spiky flower with deep blue or light blue hues. Blue Delphinium can be versatile when you know how to use it! From sympathy arrangements, casket pieces, home arrangements and even bridal bouquets, this flower is a beauty!

Favorite varieties:

Some fun facts about Blue Delphinium:

  • It was used by Native Americans for making blue dye.

  • It symbolizes Dignity

  • Delphinium is an herb and can be used in many alternative medicines.

  • Delphinium stems can grow up to 6 ft tall!

  • Some say the name comes from the Greek word “delphínion” meaning like a dolphin, as the shape and color reflect the dolphin.

  • Delphinium has ties to ancient Egypt where it was used to decorate mummies.

  • Delphinium is not safe for pets.

Thistle

Blue Thistle is a unique, but versatile flower! When thinking of florals, you always want to consider textures as well as colors. Thistle offers both! We use thistle in arrangements, as well as wedding florals and sympathy arrangements. Thistle is versatile and offers such a unique look to anything it is added to. But be aware: thistle can be prickly!

A few fun facts about thistle:

  • Thistle is Scotland’s national flower.

  • With its beauty & its nature the meaning of a thistle can be anything from aggressiveness and pride to power and might!

  • Many creatures are attracted to Thistle; mainly bees! Save the pollinators!

  • Thistle can grow up to 8ft tall and 4 ft wide and can be a booger to get rid of! (makes for a great garden addition)

  • Thistle isn’t appealing to most pets due to its prickly exterior, but if for some reason your pet ingested it, it wouldn’t harm them!

  • Symbolizes protection

These are just a few of the varieties of blue flowers, but we hope this has been helpful, informative and inspiring when you think about your next floral order or even your upcoming wedding or event!
